The first month of school our little lambs will be celebrating their uniqueness! We will work around the theme I AM SPECIAL that focuses on our special names, faces, and homes. Through sharing with teachers and classmates the children will become a part of a new group – their class. We will learn that even though we are different, we are all special and important in God’s eyes.
As fall approaches we will talk about the changes we see around us. We will also identify fruits and vegetables that are harvested in autumn. The children will even do some cooking! Making homemade applesauce will be our very first cooking activity of the school year. Appropriately, red will be our color of the month for September. We will focus on one color per month this school year.
Our classroom is center-based to encourage lots of discovery. Math, Writing, Home Living, Art, Building, Science, and Books are the centers we will be introduced to in this unit. Others will be added in the next theme. Every day at Circle Time the children will enjoy a story related to the lesson’s theme or the bible theme of the month. September’s bible theme is Creation. Learning new songs will also be a regular part of our routine.
We are trying to encourage name recognition here at school. Here are some things you might do at home: label your child’s belongings and show them to him or her, sign their artwork for them and put it on display, call attention to the letters in his or her name and point them out on signs and such.
