January 2012 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and a restful break.  It is good to be back.  As the New Year begins, our children may experience some transitional issues returning to school.  They may show reluctance or have difficulty reentering their routines.  This is normal and to be expected.  It was a long break and will take some time to readjust back to “real life.”

Even though December seems so long ago, we spent the month learning about the Gingerbread Men and Christmas.  We read many different versions of the Gingerbread Man, even one about a Gingerbread Cowboy.  We compared and contrasted the different versions.  The children really enjoyed reading and listening to all the different versions and picking their favorite one.

We spent the rest of the month learning about the First Christmas.  We discussed the beginning, middle and end of the story and what our Greatest Gift is- Jesus Christ.  The children also practiced their songs everyday and they sang them so beautifully at our Christmas presentation.  I was so impressed with them!

This month we will be learning the following:

Themes- New Year, Author Study on Ezra Jack Keats, Five Senses, and Winter

Writing- This month we will continue to focus on the mechanics of writing more readable stories.  We will also learn how to partner with our peers to aid each other in writing more readable stories.  We will also pick one story to edit and revise and work through that process.  We  will then finish the month with beginning our unit on the craft of revision.

Handwriting- Q, G, S, A, I, T, J, Review of all capitals and numbers

Reading-This month we will begin work on summarizing and finding the main idea in stories.  We will summarize the beginning, middle and end of stories.  We will also continue working on graphic organizers to aid us in comprehension of stories.  Children will also study an author (Ezra Jack Keats) and become familiar with a variety of his stories, compare and contrast them, and extend them.

Phonics/Word Work: -at, -ash, -am, -op, -ot, -ob word families

Math- Identify and describe attributes of shapes, compare shapes, realize that shapes remain the same even if their position is changed, model and solve subtraction number stories using manipulatives, learn about the – symbol, recognize and write numbers, compare and order numbers, sort blocks acrroding to different attributes, identifying addition and subtraction stories, using the +, -, = symbols, and reading, representing and writing 2-digit numbers, increase awareness of the passage of time and order of events, reinforce patterning skills, introduce counting forward and backward on the calculator, develop and extend measurement skills and introduce and review tally marks as a way to count and record groups of 5

Verses- Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.  Hebrews 13:8, Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.  Psalm 34:13, Love is patient, love is kind.  1 Corinthians 13:4

Angels February News

January in Review

Although January came and went with mild weather and barely a flake of snow, we learned about winter weather and snow.  The children really enjoyed our science day where we explored the properties of ice. We observed beautiful snowflake shaped ice cubes, and how various changes in heat and water affected   the ice and how long it took to melt, as well as changes in texture as we patiently dropped salt water on the ice cubes.

We had a wonderful time reading classic children’s literature, The Hat and The Mitten by Jan Brett.  The children loved the stories and the beautiful illustrations, and learned about foreshadowing (a technique Brett uses in her illustrations), as well as sequencing and memory skills.  We also read A Hat for Minerva Louise, and enjoyed making a silly hat book and Crazy Hat Day.  Hedgie was a litte hedgehog with a unique problem in one of our stories, and we learned about hedgehogs, then had a wonderful time making hedgehog shaped cookies!

Our alphabet boxes are more than half-full, as we have learned the letters Aa though Oo and made books to go with those letters.  We are currently working on the numeral 17 and what that represents.    We have implemented some independent learning centers to practice our letter formation and to practice math concepts.    The children are doing a wonderful job trying to complete the tasks at the centers.  We are trying especially hard to follow multi-step directions.

Miss Barbara’s class, the Lions, and our class get together each Wednesday for a lovely Bible story presentation.  Miss Barbara presents the story on her lovely flannel board set, and the children remain spellbound!    In January, we learned about Jesus’ family taking him and escaping to Egypt to avoid Herod, as well as Joseph and the beautiful coat his father gave him.  I m sure you saw the fantastic artwork in the hall as the children painted and constructed their interpretation of Joseph.    We also learned about Jacob and his wonderful dream, as well as brothers Jacob and Esau, brothers who were quite opposite.

Speaking of opposites, we learned about night and day, and things people do during those times.  We enjoyed many books relating to this subject.  Some of the children were a bit surprised that the rest of the household did not go to bed when they did!  Our Pajama Party was a huge success, as the children enjoyed coming to Preschool in their pj’s, sleeping in their sleeping bags, eating “breakfast” at school, and all of the other activities of the day.  We finished this week with more opposites, learning more words, and reading many books.  Whew!

We started February continuing working on opposites, and will work on rhyming for the rest of the month.  Other themes include Valentine’s Day, Nutrition, Dental Health, and we will finish February and begin March with Dr. Seuss studies as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

The Lions

Welcome to the Lions Class Page!

Thank you for all the good wishes and lovely Christmas gifts.  I am truly blessed to work with such a wonderful group of children, and wonderful loving families.  May God bless you in 2012 as you seek to know Him, and find out His goodness and love for you.

Our themes and concentrations for the month of January are:  New Year’s expectations,  Winter Weather and Clothing,  Animals in Winter, Day and Night.  Letters for our show and tell game are L, M, N.

We continue to work on number and letter recognition, fine motor skills, speaking in sentence patterns, following directions and taking turns.  We are working on using pictures to tell a story and retelling a story in order.

We will learn from the Bible how God took care of the baby Jesus by warning Joseph to take the family and escape to Egypt.  Two other Bible lessons will be Joseph’s Coat and Jacob’s Dream.  The children respond eagerly to our weekly Bible time with the Angels class.

January 29 will be Pajama Day. Children should dress in pj’s to close the theme of Night and Day.  Some children are uncomfortable with this change from the usual expectation.  If this is the case with your child, perhaps they would prefer to dress in sweats.  Encourage, but do not insist that they wear pajamas, if  this causes them to feel anxious.

We will play outside whenever weather conditions permit.  Please be sure that your child has warm accessories for the playground.

The Lambs Class’ News

Lambs Class

December 2011 Newsletter

We are in the season of Advent now and our conversations, activities and crafts are all designed to prepare our hearts for Christmas.  We are continuing to have chapel for approximately 20 minutes every Monday.  In chapel, the children have been learning songs for the Christmas program on Sunday, December 18th @ 10:15am.  More details will follow.

Our plan for the month is to begin learning:

Letter: F f                                                                             Color: Green & Orange

Number: 4 (four)                                                              Bible story: The Christmas Story

Snack has been a wonderful experience in the classroom.  We have enjoyed some delicious & healthy treats such as yogurt, homemade muffins, cheese sticks, goldfish, fruits & veggies.  Thank you to everyone who has provided these wonderful, peanut-free treats.  Please remember to check the monthly Snack Calendar hanging on our bulletin board or Tomorrow’s Hope Preschool website calendar http://www.tomorrowshopepreschool.org/calendar/ which will provide you with the Lamb’s class Snack Calendar for the entire year.  Also, please remember to always include cups, plates and napkins to support the snack you have chosen to bring.

Show & Tell is the 1st Wednesday of every month.  The children can choose an item from home that reflects the letters, colors or number we will be focusing on that month.  Unless it is Show & Tell Day, please help your child to leave those special toys, blankets, stuffed animals, etc. in the car or at home.  It makes for a very difficult situation for Ms. Linda and myself if we have to remove a personal item from the classroom because it is becoming a disruption.  Thank you for your help with this request.

Our Christmas Party is scheduled for Wednesday, December 21st from 10:30a–12pm.  Please check your calendars and get in touch with Amanda Kuklis or Natalie Frament if you would like to volunteer for the party.  Sign-up sheets for items needed for the party will be hung outside of the classroom.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.  As always, I can be reached at carol@tomorrowshopepreschool.org.
